It is one of the most important centers of the Ionian coast and gives the name to the entire surrounding area of the Locride. Town in the province of Reggio Calabria, Locri is a popular tourist resort, with its beautiful beaches that stretch for miles, its crystal blue sea and its springs that feed thermal mineral baths with special healing properties. Locri is also very famous thanks to the ancient Greek and Roman remains. Located throughout the area.. Greek colonists of Locride Opunzia settled on the Cape Zefirio around 670 B.C. Here the Locresi cultivated the cult of the Goddess Persephone, to whom they dedicated a temple, the legendary "Persephoneion. In the same period, Zaleuco, a Greek lawgiver, established the first written code of laws, known as the Locrian code.
In the Archaeological Park of Locri Epizefiri it is possible to admire part of the great fortified wall, that with its 7.5 km perimeter enclosed the ancient city, the commercial district known as "Centocamere", the Ionic temple of Maras and the several sighting defense towers, the Greek-Roman theater in the district of Pirettina and the National Museum, situated near the archaeological site along road 106, with its collection of pre-Hellenic, Roman and Greek exhibits (collections of coins, pinakes - votive clay tablets, votive objects and various epigraphic material from the local excavations).
The preservation of the old city has facilitated the excavation process and allows the visit of the remains of the ancient Magna Grecia city of Locri Epizefiri, surrounded by a typical Mediterranean environment, rich in nature and valuable landscapes, especially in hilly area.
Not to miss: the Town Hall, built in Renaissance style, by the Florentine architect Alberto Spinola; the Palazzo of the Foundation Scannapieco Vincenzo ", designed in Neoclassical style by Augusto Piccoli, and Palazzo Nieddu Del Rio - Teotino.
