The Castelvecchio estate extends just above the town of Sagrado, where the Gorizia karst landscape offers unsuspected vistas of nature and tranquillity. The view enjoyed from here is truly unique, and on clear days the eye can sweep at one glance over the whole Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, from the Alps to the sea. The rich landscape suggestions of the area blend with the noble, ancient origins of these places, still borne out in our days by the Renaissance villa, the park dotted with cypresses and age-old oaks, and the vast wooded estate. Over the years, splendour and ruin have alternated in this land that still poses the challenge of a difficult, arid and rocky soil, with which however the efforts of man can forge unexpected alliances. In the seventies were planted the first vineyards, which now extend over 40 hectares. The decisive element for the success of the grape cultivation was then, as it is now, the availability of water.
Thanks in fact to the typical phenomena of this karst land, below the hard rocky surface lie natural basins in which water collects and is held. From these wells, a drip-irrigation piping system extends over countless kilometers, bringing the life-giving water to the roots of the vines.
The parent rock, the scant red earth - rich in iron and lime but poor in organic components - the particular climate and the late harvest are some of the essential elements for a production of limited quantity, but with absolutely unique characteristics. Alongside these particular environmental and farming conditions, the estate output, made up 70% of red wines, is provided with a modern cellar, with stainless-steel wine cisterns and oak barrels of different capacities, where the most important reds mature and develop their refined personality for about three years before being put out on the store shelves.
Acclaimed by an increasing number of national and international connoisseurs, the quality of the Castelvecchio wines is the result of bold production decisions, tied to the particular characteristics of the land. The passion of the Terraneo family, which has owned the estate for almost twenty years, combined with the experience and expertise of wine consultant Giovanni Bignucolo, the creative spirit of the Azienda Agricola Castelvecchio estate.
EVENTS AND WEDDINGS
Castelvecchio has opened its doors to the public in order to become the scenery for ceremonies and weddings. Inside the estate, in fact, there are three separate buildings that can offer some perfect solutions for those who want to make unforgettable their most important formal events.
The Villa, built at the end of the 16th century by the Tasso della Torre Counts and visited during the ages by Kings and Emperors, has three rooms that can host up to 100 people with two adjacent cortiles where, in the warmest seasons, some extra guests can find plenty of space. The style of the Villa is that of an ancient Venetian Villa with stuccos, wall and ceiling decorations, and typical mosaic floor. This solution is suitable for those private ceremonies in which the authenticity of the ambience gives an added elegance and sophistication to the atmosphere of the day.
The Barchessa, constructed in the 18th century by the same Counts and transformed into the headquarters of the Italian general command during World War One, is another interesting choice. The building has been completely renovated with a more modern style without changing the original architecture that can still be seen in the wooden timbers of the inner lounges. The Barchessa has ample ambiences that can host up to 300 people without including the external veranda connected to the main building that can give some extra room for some music, dances and the moment of the cake cutting.
Also the new wine cellar, built during the 90s, can be the perfect solution for those who are looking for an all-in-the-family celebration. The rustic tasting room, with its friendly environment warmed up by a big central fireplace, can hold up to 80 people. The outdoor cortile has a small portico, perfect as a meeting point for the welcome aperitif, from where one can get a view on the 40-hectare vineyard.
These simple words cannot be enough to express the suggestive sight of Castelvecchio which brings to the beauty of the landscape the unusual magnificence of a nature deepened in an ancient history whose testimonies follow us still today. One should climb the karst hill of Castelvecchio in order to understand better the splendour of this estate and to get the taste of its historical magic that still vibrates, enchanting the sight of its visitors for its elegance and beauty.
